Colon Health

Colon cancer is the third top cancer killer of men.  Only lung and prostate deaths exceed the number of colon cancer deaths among men.  However, colon cancer can be detected and stopped before they become cancer.  One big reason is that before colon cancer forms, it is red-flagged by growths known as polyps.  Polyps are not cancerous at first leaving a window of opportunity to doctors to remove the polyps preventing the onslaught of cancer.

Detection is not the only way to prevent colon cancer.  A lot of factors appear to make a difference, most of them dietary.  One of the most consistent findings in colon cancer research is that a diet high in fat raises the risk of colon cancer thus reduced fat intake is necessary.  Equally important as cutting fat, consuming a diet rich in fiber also substantially lowers the risk of colon cancer.  Fruits and vegetables are both low in fats and generally high in fiber so eating lots of them will reduce colon cancer risk.  In addition to these basic guidelines, drinking alcohol moderately and engaging in physical activity lower risk of colon cancer.
